It all began in 1959, when the Scotsman Bernhard O’Connor, owner of the Highland Hotel on Jersey Island, wanted to establish a first-class high-mountain hotel in Norway.
Sander O. Fossgård owned a central plot in Geilo, and after short negotiations, the plot was sold to O’Connor. Not long after, the mountain architect Einar Vaardal-Lunde was committed to drawing the new hotel. He was previously known at Geilo with business buildings where flat roofs featured the style.
The hotel’s name was Highland, named after the owner’s other hotel. In popular terms, the name was long Høggland. The official opening of the Highland Hotel took place on Midsummer’s Eve in 1963. Since then, the hotel has had several owners, but in 2005, the current owner, Pål G. Gundersen, bought the hotel.
In 2013, the hotel went through a massive transformation process, transforming the traditional hotel into a modern lodge. The well-known interior designer Anemone Wille Våge stood for design and interior.
Today, the rooms are converted to apartments with living rooms and kitchens and double rooms. The hotel operates the apartments that owners have bought and rent them out as double rooms, family rooms and apartments.
